Nota d'uso1 to allow, to permit e to forbid si costruiscono con to + infinito quando il loro complemento oggetto (che corrisponde al complemento di termine italiano) viene espresso: I forbid you to watch TV, ti proibisco di guardare la televisione; My parents won't allow me to go to the disco, i miei genitori non mi permetteranno di andare in discoteca; The doctor permitted the patient to drink coffee, il medico consentì al paziente di bere caffè.2 Quando invece il complemento oggetto non è espresso sono seguiti dal verbo alla forma in - ing: Our teacher doesn't allow (o permit) using the dictionary during the exam, il nostro insegnante non consente l'uso del dizionario durante l'esame; The law forbids photocopying books, la legge vieta di fotocopiare i libri.3 Sono comuni anche le corrispondenti forme passive: Using the dictionary is allowed during the exam, l'uso del dizionario è consentito durante l'esame; We were forbidden to meet, ci era (o ci fu) vietato di incontrarci; Passengers are not permitted to talk to the driver, ai passeggeri non è consentito parlare al conducente.
